Old Perseans Rally for Funds
3 June 2009
Two former pupils of The Perse have chosen a rather unusual way to raise money for their old school: attempting to drive a £100 car, painted like the Yellow Submarine, from London to Italy!
Taking part in the Scally Rally, which starts on 12 June, Jamie Turner and Eddie Copeland, both 25, will be driving a 1988 Mark 2 Golf with their friend Sarah as they make their way to Rimini, via the South of France and Switzerland. The journey is expected to take them four days although they admit this may be ‘optimistic’.
Talking about their challenge, Eddie - who now works as the school's Development Director - commented: ‘The bizarre nature of the rally appealed to our sense of humour, and we thought it would be a different way to help raise money for the school’s bursary fund, which provides financial support to those who couldn’t otherwise afford the education we were so lucky to have. It will be an interesting drive – especially as the gears are shot – and we still need to find a way to attach a periscope to the roof!’
