Two Major Milestones for The Perse
26 March 2009
This month has seen two very significant milestones for The Perse.
The first is that on Wednesday 25th March, the school celebrated its 394th birthday, reminding us that The Perse is in fact the oldest secondary school in Cambridge, having been founded by Dr. Stephen Perse, a fellow of Gonville and Caius, back in 1615. As the Head, Ed Elliott, mentioned in his speech to staff and pupils, Stephen Perse was the first in a long line of benefactors stretching right up to the present day, whose donations have made the school’s very existence, let alone success, possible.
It is therefore fitting that 25th March also marked the formal end of the school’s latest fundraising campaign, Access to Excellence, which has already helped fund the construction of a new hall at The Pelican, a new classroom and art/technology centre at The Prep, and which will provide £600k towards a second gymnasium at The Upper.
Most importantly, £1.6million will go directly towards school bursaries, to ensure that Dr. Perse’s wish to provide a first-class education to those who could not otherwise afford it continues to be a reality. In the current challenging economic climate, the need for this has never been so great.
Thanks to the generosity of OPs, past and current parents, and other friends of the school, we are now just £90,000 away from our final £3million target. That amount is equivalent to providing a child with a full bursary for their entire education at the Upper school, and hence we are determined to make up the shortfall. If either you or someone you know may be in a position to help us across the finishing line by making a contribution, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Happy Birthday from The Perse - and thank you for your support!
