Opening of the Nigel Richardson Hall at the Pelican.

A very mixed group gathered to celebrate the official opening of the new Nigel Richardson Hall (named after the recently retired headmaster of the Upper School) at the Pelican on Thursday 16th October.  Unfortunately Nigel could not join us for the opening but promises to visit soon.  The hall provided a superb area for Pelican staff from the past, supporters, friends, current staff, neighbours and those involved in the design and production of the space to enjoy a drink and a chat.  After a very warm welcome by Mrs Penny Oates and Ed Elliott, guests were taken on tours of the school and were very favourably impressed by the bright and colourful displays throughout.  They saw the great space the hall provides; the new sound proofed music rooms; the library with its colourful round the world carpet as well as the extended areas in several class rooms which can double as areas for small group work.

A rolling presentation in the hall showed how members of the Britten Sinfonia orchestra came to The Pelican and worked with the children producing some marvellous pieces of music.  Comments from both staff and pupils were that, “everyone learned a great deal” and they certainly looked to have thoroughly enjoyed themselves in the process.  The Nigel Richardson Hall, adorned with seasonal wall hangings created by the pupils, will provide a wonderful space for pupils at the Pelican to be all together and has enabled many other teaching spaces to be enlarged and improved.
